With the new Star Wars movie out in theaters Star Wars fanatics couldn’t be happier. It seems that every movie that comes to theaters, there has to be a similar video game to further capitalize off the name and Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith is no different.
Star Wars games have been created for gaming system from what seems like the dawn of time and it seems as if there are a million of them out there. This new Star Wars game features 16 total levels that follow the story of Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi. Throughout each level you will play as Anakin or Obi-Wan and use your light-saber and "The Force" to accomplish your objectives. The objectives range from opening sealed doors, moving or destroying objects to continue through the level, or defeat a number of enemy droids, or as they call them in the game "scrap metal".
Gameplay
The sixteen levels of the game are very short, and although there are a number of bonus levels, the game is pretty short lived. Although each stage offers a number of objectives and things to accomplish, these objectives are pretty easy and can be done very fast. However, the game gets difficult when you enter a battle stage where you go one on one against a character who really knows how to use a light-saber. If you just rushed through the previous stages, chances are you won't be able to defeat the boss stages. After each and every stage you are awarded a number of points that you can use to upgrade your attacks. If you do poorly on a level, you won't get nearly as much upgrade points as you would if you did everything perfectly and found all of the secrets within the level.
There are a number of different attacks and combination of attacks that you can perform with your light saber, so it will take anyone a good amount of time to master most of the moves and attacks. The three basic moves are the Saber Strikes, the Block, and the Strafe. The Saber Strikes consist of three different kinds of Saber attacks. Pressing X will give you a fast saber attack, pressing B will give you a slow but very powerful attack, and pressing Y will give you a combination of the two. Knowing when and how to use these three different Saber Strikes is important as it usually determines who will win the fight. Blocking is also a move that you will need to learn and you should never let your guard down will your opponent is in the middle of an attack unless you see an opportunity to strike back quickly. Strafing is used while blocking and will allow you to move, in circular motion, around the enemy that you have targeted.
Once you have learned the basic moves and attacks through the first few levels you definitely want to know how to perform combo attacks before you begin your first one on one battle stage. The first few combos that are available is the Rapid Slash, Rapid Back Strike, Rapid Jung Slash, and the Rapid Slash. Once you progress through the levels you will unlock and learn more combos that you will be able to look up in the options and use them whenever you need them.
In addition to the combo attacks that you can perform, you can also use Force Powers which are very different from normal attacks. The Force Powers consist of the Force Push, Grasp, Stun, Heal, Speed, and Saber Throw. Unfortunately these highly powerful and useful powers are limited. Like in most other games, you have a meter that indicates how much Force that you have. When the bar runs out, you can no longer perform the Force Powers.
At the end of each level the game will calculate how well you did on that certain stage. It will then award you a number of points and show this to you on a bar and you will be able to see how much you go versus how much you could have gotten. Once this is finished you will then be able to use these points to strengthen your character in a number of different areas. You can either upgrade your Force Powers or your Combat Skills.
If you are any kind of Star Wars fan you will definitely enjoy the huge amount on unlockables that you will be unlocking throughout the game. Some of the unlockables include 5 bonus missions, artwork, and the actual movie clips that are played in the game. The five bonus missions are fun and allow you to play as different characters instead of the normal Anakin and Obi-Wan. The missions are also extremely hectic and will give you a chance to see what you can really do by putting you in situations where there are tons of enemies constantly attacking you.
Graphics
By far the best aspect of the visuals in the game is the environments in which you play. They are complex and look exactly like the something you would see in the Star Wars movie. There are all kinds of moving objects, machinery, electricity bolts, giant doors, and everything looks futuristic. However, the overall image quality of everything in the game is quite low and looks like a game from about a year ago.
Another great part of the game is the movie scenes that are usually played before the start of a new level. The scenes are actual footage from the movie and set the stage just right for the new level. Once the problem arises in the movie the game starts on the new level and then you begin playing.
Overall
Overall, Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith is an excellent game but can get repetitive and the main story mode is quite short. The levels all have very similar objectives and the gameplay is similar throughout most of the game, so it is easy to become bored. The one-on-one light saber battles are pretty fun but there are only a few of them mixed into the game. The environments are extremely well put together and look amazing, but toned way down due to their low image quality. In the end Star Wars Episode III, other than these few downsides, is really quite great, enjoyable, and fun to master the use of the famous light saber.
