The Godfather The Game, based off of the movie, takes place in New York City between 1945 and 1955. Shortly after the start of the game, you become a member of the Corleone family, which controls the Little Italy area of Manhattan. Your goal is to rise to power and eventually become the Don of New York. You will rise through the ranks of the family, have a number of run-ons with rival families, extort businesses, and maybe knock off a bank or two.

Before things start to heat up though, you get to design your own character. The best part about this is that your custom character will be in almost all the cut-scenes exactly the way you designed him. By using "MobFace technology" you can make your character look a million different ways. You can control hair color and style, facial features, clothes, hats, and loads of other sub options you could mess around. You will want at least something half decent before heading off into the game; the characteristics you change are very visible and define your character's style throughout the game.

There are tons of things to run around and do in The Godfather, but the main tasks are the missions and taking over businesses. The missions are the meat of the game and further the storyline, but taking over businesses are just as fun and exciting. Make no mistake though, it's a rough city and if you act reckless you will be waking up in the hospital all too often.

The missions add a great deal of action and variety to the gameplay and keep things moving. Once you get into the city, you can do anything you want such as steal a car, hold up a bakery, rob a delivery truck, but after fooling around for a while you will want to jump right into the story. By picking up a phone, somebody will inform you on what you should be doing or to meet up with them somewhere. A location will appear on your map and once you get there that mission will start. The missions are always different and involve lots of action. For instance, during one mission you have to drive somebody to the hospital in an ambulance while being chased by rival families with machine guns. The missions are always interesting and exciting and keep you playing.

Extortion

Extorting businesses is where you make all your money. By promising protection, businesses will pay you a certain amount, but getting them to do this isn't always easy. You will usually have to force or pressure the business owners into agreeing with you and handing over the cash. This can be done by beating them up, taking out your weapon and firing it, or even shooting them (without killing them, otherwise you will lose the business.) Once you start to do something crazy like this, a group of guys from a rival family will usually come in to help protect the business owner. This is where things can get ugly, especially if the rival family members are equipped with weapons. If you are able to kill off all the guys that rush in to take you out and manage to keep the store owner alive, he will pay for your protection and you will make money every week from that business.
