Capcom is by no means a new face in the gaming industry. They have been around for decades and have tons of classic games from the past. Because of this, Capcom decided to bring twenty-two of their classic arcade games together and offer them as one bundle pack on the Xbox platform. It's called Capcom Classics Collection and contains classic titles as old as 1984 and goes up to 1992. If you aren't familiar with some of Capcom's older games, maybe Street Fighter, Super Ghouls N' Ghosts, Final Fight, and Commando ring a few bells. Without a doubt, Capcom has had a good number of classic titles in its history and even if you aren't an old school gamer, you will enjoy playing through some of these all time favorites.
Gameplay
The first few games on the game list are 1942, 1943, and 1943 KAI. In 1942 you play as a tiny plane that goes up against an onslaught of enemies and bullets. Your goal is to fire back, use a number of upgrades to become more powerful, and get past each stage. You can also avoid bullets and other objects by performing a “loop the loop”, or back-flip. In the game 1943, the basic idea and gameplay is kept the same but comes with many new upgrades. You are now flying in a P-38 jet fighter equipped with a total of six weapons. You will also be able to interact with weather elements (lightning, cyclones, and tsunamis) to help destroy the massive amount of enemies on the screen at any given time. 1943 also features more of a defined storyline than the earlier 1942 game. In 1943 KAI is more of a continuation of 1943 and not much has changed in this game.
The next two games on down the list are the Commandos (Commando and Bionic Commando). In the first Commando you play as Super Joe, a soldier, who fights solely against armies to rescue their captives. You will walk around on a playing field and have the option to shoot or throw grenades. The bullets are very slow moving, but there will pretty much always be many on the screen at any given time, so skill is involved in avoiding the bullets and grenades coming at you while still trying to dish out enough to take everyone down. Bionic Commando is a very different game in the way it is setup but has a similar concept. You now have the option to fire or use your hook. In this game you have to again access to the enemy's military base and stop them from executing their secret plans. Most of the level requires you to travel vertically and this is when you will use the grappling hook the most.
If you played the now classic Final Fight back in the day, there is almost no way you won't be happy about this one. You will start off on the mean streets of Metro City and eventually make your way into a high rise building to save a girl from the leader of a street gang, which oddly enough is in a wheel chair and shoots suction cup darts. You will take on a few small bosses, get to use some weapons like knives, swords, and pipes, and have a great time with the basic, but fun, combat system.
The Ghouls N' Ghosts series of games were also very popular back in there day. If you remember these games at all, the one thing you probably remember is how difficult they were and they are no different on Capcom Classics Collection. You play as Sir Arthur and have to make it over a huge amount of territory infested with all sorts of creepy things you would expect to see on Halloween night. Your mission is usually to save your love, but this usually never happens due to the difficulty of the game. The player starts out with armor and once you are hit once you will loose your armor, if you are hit a second time you will loose a life. With the amount of enemies on the screen and the variety of them, it may take you forever to get through the game, but you will definitely have a fun time doing it.
Capcom Classics Collection features a total of three Street Fighter II (SFII, Champion Edition, and Hyper Fighting) games that are one of the most well known fighting series in the gaming world. The combat system, the characters, the backgrounds, and the animations are all very well known and extremely fun to play.
Other classic arcade games on this game include Gun.Smoke, Legendary Wings, Mercs, Pirate Ship Higemaru, Section Z, Son Son, Trojan, Vulgus. All of them are fun to play through and even more fun if you had previously played them. With 22 games on just one disc, if you grow tired of one, you can switch to another anytime you want and then back again if you want.
Multiplayer is also another great part of these games. Virtually every game in the pack allows for two players to play the game in one way or the other. Whether it is co-op, one on one, or turn based, it’s always fun to beat a buddy old school style. However, you won’t be able to take these games online and compete with others. There are also no online scoreboards so you won’t be able to see how you rank up against the rest of the world. The online capabilities would add tons of replay value to the game and it would be great to play some of the best people around the world.
Overall
Capcom Classics Collection brings back a great deal of memories for those that have been gaming for a few years and can give those that haven't a taste of what gaming was like years ago. Capcom has numerous classic arcade games in its history and this game is a great representation of their best older titles. Anyone looking into the arcade games for Xbox needs to look no further than this game. Although there are no Xbox Live capabilities, playing with a friend can sometimes be just as fun. On top of that, this game is priced at just $20! Who can argue with 22 classic arcade games for just $20?
