The classic OutRun for the arcades was a little like Project Gotham Racing for the late 80s. Its graphics were nothing spectacular or groundbreaking. However, the fun-factors were high with your score measured by how well you drove (with your girlfriend falling ever more in love with you for your drifting skills). The races weren’t ovular, nor encircled with twists and turns, nor were there laps. Instead, the game focused players on check-pointing their way to the finish line against a quick timer, insane traffic, and of course those lovely opportunities to show-off your drifting skills.
Well, for the old-school gamers they’ll have an opportunity at re-living the glory days on their Xbox, PS2, or PSP. OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast is an amazing looking game based off the classic arcade title. Players will also now be able to take control of beautiful looking cars on intense tracks with stunning detail. Sumo Digital really brought this game back to the consoles with a vengeance.
OutRun 2004?
Originally, OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast is based, graphically, on the technology that powered the phenomenal looking OutRun 2 Special Tours on the Chihiro Arcade machine. The graphics for the game looked great (almost next-gen) and it was used as a platform for the graphical design of OutRun 2006. Many of the cars also made the cut for this year’s OutRun, from the Special Tours arcade, and boy do they look beautiful.
With 30 licensed Ferrari automobiles, gamers will definitely get their need for speed. The game features the rare Superamerica, the all-new F430 and F430 Spider, plus the 550 Barchetta. In addition to the amazingly rendered vehicles, players will be able to customize the look of their Ferrari. The game will be using an original and unique color scheme for players to choose the look of their ride. There’s also bodywork designs for the cars that’ll give your ride an original look and feel. The vehicles have also undergone some tuning, with improved acceleration, top speeds, and handling.
Racing to capture hearts
If you enjoyed drifting for points, getting the attention of girls, and whipping your opponents with your dust, then you’re in luck. OutRun 2006 features the classic Heart Attack Mode that made the original so famous for drifting. You take on the highway with nothing but your score clawing at your wheels. The faster you speed past the traffic, the more you risk your wheels in drifts, and the longer you hang onto the roadways, the more you rack up points for the ultimate high score. Besides this mode, there’s the new license mode as well.
The original OutRun featured a mission outline that could be branched accordingly, and Sumo Digital has designed an entirely new mission outline for the OutRun of 2006. This new mode has been complimented with 15 entirely new tracks based throughout the U.S., in more than 30 stages. Some of these tracks take you through desert runs with open plains and two lanes, while other tracks stick you in the center of urban chaos with four-lane mayhem. All of the tracks have been rendered with realistic detail and eye-catching resolutions.
Multiplayer raceways
This game couldn’t be complete without a little online competition. Whether it’s on the PC, PS2, PSP, or Xbox Live, you can try to out-run up to six other players online. You can be sure to look for this game to be shipping for the PS2, PSP, and Xbox come March 22, 2006.
