The Rainbow Six franchise has had a long and successful history in the area of videogames. Based off the best selling novels by Tom Clancy the Rainbow Six series has let players step into the shoes of the elite anti-terrorist unit as they rid the globe of threats to the United States. Some of the missions from the numerous games have been quite memorable and are still talked about today. With the latest Rainbow Six title coming out, Rainbow Six Critical Hour, Ubisoft is hoping gamers will return to those favorite missions again.
First and foremost it should be cleared up that the seven single player missions are not “new” in the sense of brand new maps that have never been played before. They are “new” in the sense that they are old missions that have been rebuilt from the ground up using today’s technology. Don’t worry. These maps have been picked by the fans so it can be assumed that Critical Hour will feature some of the best that the Rainbow Six franchise has given gamers over the years. It is very disappointing though that this “new” Rainbow Six title is merely a combination of old single player maps. Sure we haven’t played these missions for quite a long time, but it almost seems like Ubisoft is trying to make a quick buck with the release of this game. Could this be EA’s influence? Only time will tell.
As for multiplayer there hasn’t been any concrete confirmation of whether we will actually be playing new maps or just rebuilt old ones. I’m guessing that if Ubisoft wants to sell this game at all, that they will have to include at least a few new maps. With the map count being at a high 18 this looks like a very good possibility. What we do know is going to be new about the multiplayer is the new Free-for-All mode and another game type known as Assassin. Free-for-All is self explanatory as to what type of experience it is going to bring. As for Assassin, the best guess that can be given is that one player is labeled the assassin and only kills he makes count. Whoever kills the assassin becomes the assassin themselves. It sounds a lot like Juggernaught from Halo 2.
The gameplay of Critical Hour is also returning to the roots of the franchise. Gone is the running and gunning of later Rainbow Six games. Replacing it is the slower paced, more intense crawl through the levels. This is a plus for fans since the Rainbow Six series is best when played this way. Your aim especially will be affected by how quick you move Ding and his team. Move too fast and your aim will get so inaccurate that taking aim at the enemy peaking his head around the window is almost impossible. I’m glad that this type of gameplay is coming back even though it is being played on old levels.
Overall, this game looks like it will be only for those who really, really need some new Rainbow Six. If there were actually new missions (instead of old maps), and a few new multiplayer modes (besides the standard ones) then this game would be a lot more promising. Ubisoft is softening the blow by making the game only thirty bucks, but in a world where the Xbox 360 reigns…it is hard to figure out why Ubisoft would opt to make a game like this. Look for it to be released in March.
