With Pierce Brosnan leaving the Bond franchise behind him, EA found themselves to with a problem. They still had the rights to the popular James Bond video games but to have a game featuring a Bond that had left didn’t make any sense; fans wouldn’t appreciate it. EA could always have just created a character model of their own James Bond, but fans would not go for that either. So EA took the only and best option left available to them. When you can’t use the latest Bond use the greatest: Sean Connery. Better yet, use the Sean Connery in a James Bond role based around one of the best Bond movies in the lineage; From Russia With Love. This is exactly what EA is setting out to do and from the looks of it, the game is going to rock.
From Russia With Love is a third-person action title based on the second James Bond movie of the same name. It follows James Bond as he sets out to save the world once again from an evil plot. From Russia With Love will be the first Bond game to feature Sean Connery as Bond. For fans of the old movies it is a welcome decision. EA is said to have worked very closely with Connery in shaping how Bond moves, acts, and fights. It is great to see Connery contributing to a character he portrayed so long ago. As can be imagined, the game looks great. Bond's character model is incredibly close to the look of his Bond movie days.
The game is played in the typical third-person so players can see Bond on the screen. Gamers are going to have a wealth of different options when attacking enemies which promises to add some much needed replay value. Bond will obviously have a hefty arsenal of weapons on his side. AK-47s, rocket launchers, machine guns, pistols and grenades are all at the player’s disposal. Going against the latest trend in shooting games, which restricts the number of weapons a player can hold, Bond will be able to hold a fair amount of firepower at one time. The final figure has yet to be confirmed but the number is said to be around six or seven weapons plus grenades. But Bond can’t shoot everyone. Should an enemy get too close Bond will be able to engage in the hand-to-hand combat just like in Everything or Nothing. The structure of melee combat will probably be similar but expectit to be an evolved system as typical with any sequels. But where would Bond be without his famous Q gadgets? From Russia With Love is no slouch in this department promising players plenty of toys.
A new tweak to the gameplay in From Russia With Love is the experience system. As players progress through the game they will accumulate two sets of points. One set is used to buy unlockables. These unlockables are typical for a videogame (concept art, interviews, ect.). The other set of points are used to upgrade Bond’s arsenal. Whether they can be spent on just the gadgets or weapons has yet to be determined. This also is going to add a lot of replay value to the game. Players will want to go back into previous levels and try out their new and improved Bond. EA seems determined to not only add longevity to their game, but also make the player’s feel like every action they take has a purpose.
What has gamers most excited (thanks to screenshots) is the inclusion of the famous rocket pack. How the rocket pack handles, how long its gameplay segments are, and how much it is featured in the game are really unknowns at this point. We do know that Bond will be using the rocket pack in at least one outdoors location. In addition to the rocket pack gamers are also getting behind the wheel of Bond’s car. Veterans of the Bond games know what to expect here. Players will either chase or be chased using only their driving skills and the assortment of toys Q built into the vehicle. It can be guessed that, just as in previous titles, the Need for Speed engine will be used here.
Since From Russia With Love is coming to the Xbox, Xbox Live is a given. The typical deathmatch and objective based games will be present for your online enjoyment. Hopefully the rocket pack will make it to the online matches to add further elements to online play!
Sean Connery is finally getting his first crack at the Bond videogame franchise. Honestly, it is about time! Brosnan was this generation’s Bond, but no one can ever replace Mr. Connery. He is the man who made Bond popular (sorry Roger Moore). From the looks of it he's going to do to videogames what he did to the Bond movies.
