Based on the popular, fan-favorite releases of George A. Romero’s zombie series, City of the Dead is a first-person shooter taking the zombie franchise by storm in this new epic masterpiece. The master of the dead, George A. Romero, is taking charge and heading the pack as writer and director for the upcoming game based on his legacy of zombie thrillers. With many of the classic clichés of Romero’s zombie movies and all the gore your eyes can feast on, this game wouldn’t be complete without a very key element in making this one of the goriest video games of all time: Tom Savini --a legendary film make-up artist and star of "Dusk till Dawn", Savini is also City of the Dead’s main character voice actor. The City of the Dead is also being prompted as the first-person shooter version of Burnout. With intense and high energy shoot-outs, replicating the action found in most arcade titles.
The game takes place off the North American Coast on an island, called Ningun Futuro, meaning “no future” in Spanish. Like Resident Evil or other zombie related games, a reason is given for the outbreak of the living dead: Military operations gone wrong. Dr. Rocane, a psychotic pathologist heading the experiments, is anything but disappointed and unleashed the undead, free to roam the city streets as they please. Players will take on the role of one of four playable characters, who happened to be stranded on the island due to a helicopter crash. One protagonist includes Savini’s character, an ex-cop, named William “Red” Maclean.
Gore, gore....Gore!!!
If you’ve played a Hunter game, Resident Evil, Soldier of Fortune, or mutilated The Flood in Halo, then you’ll be right at home in COTD. Running on the Havoc engine and using new design techniques for enemies, COTD is serving up some serious, gory action. When you shoot body parts they blast away from the zombie’s body, but that doesn’t mean the enemy stays on the ground. In fact, keeping the enemy on the ground is the real trick in City of the Dead. Exploding, crushing or removing the head of a zombie is the only way to keep them down for good. Blowing off their legs means they’ll just crawl after you, and blowing off their arms mean, they’ll just walk after you. Like Soldier of Fortune, City of the Dead keeps the blood and gore on a high standard. Although, unlike Soldier of Fortune, City of the Dead keeps the bad guys coming back for more and more, even after taking some serious firepower.
Burning out for zombies
Burnout has "Crash mode", and City of the Dead has a very similar mode with different intentions. The object in Burnout’s "Crash mode" was to rack up as much score as possible, by crashing into a clutter of cars. The object in City of the Dead’s mode is to rack up as many kills as possible, with one shot, from a specified weapon. Although to pull off a successful multi-kill, players must wait for as many zombies to pile up together before taking their only shot. Sometimes using environmental hazards to your advantage better accumulates kills. , such as shooting the hinge that’s keeping boxes or crates suspended in the air, causing them to come crashing down on the zombies below. You could also toss a single grenade into some barrels and watch the zombies in the area fry.
There’s also points awarded for all sorts of trick shots, skill shots or combo-kills. , which almost gives players a play-by-play of all the mayhem they cause on-screen. This is certainly going to make for high replay value and the addition of scoreboards on Xbox Live would only enhance this feature (which should be available considering the online availability of this game).
Zombie killing machines
Whether it’s blasting down zombies in the streets, in the mall, at a hospital, a cemetery or in a secret lab, COTD is promising to keep the action hot. There’s no better way to accomplish re-killing the dead, than with a heavy arsenal of weapons at your disposal. COTD features handguns with razor sharp edges around the trigger and a plethora of other weapons such as shotguns, machine guns, sniper rifles, assault rifles and more. Kuju Ent. is also mixing things up a bit regarding the use of certain weapons. For instance, with the shotgun, one of the controller’s triggers will be used to fire the shotgun, while the second trigger will pump the shell out of the chamber. There’s even a part where players will explore the lab where the zombies came from, encountering lethal variants of the walking dead, such as zombies who died with firearms but don’t know how to use them effectively, therefore spraying up the area up with bullets. There’s zombies who can crawl on all fours and can leap at players with deadly force and there's even zombies who can hurl nearby objects at the player. Nevertheless, zombies aren’t the only ones who get special weapons. Experimental weapons are scattered throughout the abandoned lab and all for the player's taking. Players will have access to such items as a grenade that creates a miniature black hole, sucking everything into it. Kuju Entertainment is making sure gamers get the job done with all the necessary firepower (present and futuristic) a zombie killer could ever want.
Unity of the undead
Keeping to the current trend of multi-player fiascos, Kuju has ensured the standard modes will be intact, such as the two player split screen co-op, the on-line four player co-op, the multi-player death match modes, and even the option to choose between a human and a zombie. COTD also has an abundance of arcade features and modes to keep the replay standards high and further tests the skills of the most competent zombie killer. For more info, stay tuned as City of the Dead draws closer to its release.
