Rare, a popular UK developer of much acclaim, is preparing to rock the boat again with Kameo: Elements of Power, their upcoming entry to the Xbox market. As first impressions go, Kameo makes a good one. It looks like another strong title for Rare.
You play the game as Kameo, a young girl who finds herself burdened by her mother's unfinished business. It seems Theena, Kameo's mother was a world-saving heroine in her day, and her duties now pass to her daughter. Theena duked it out with the Troll King Thorn at the last Great Battle, and trapped him forever in an impenetrable stone prison. Well, maybe not forever, because he's free now, and wreaking chaos and destruction in Kameo's world.
The story may be a bit of a cliche, but at first glance, the game itself looks and sounds like a lot of fun. Early screenshots boast intricately detailed 3D environments, and smooth, crisp character models. The lighting fills everything out gorgeously, and the sum of all this is an immersive 3D environment loaded with traps, puzzles, adversaries, allies and surprises.
Kameo doesn't make her journey alone. Along with her mother's burden, she seems to have inherited her mother's ability to capture mosters descended from the Elemental Ancestors. These monsters come in five varieties, Fire, Water, Plant, Ice and Rock. Once Kameo captures one of these monsters, she can take over its body at any time, and use it to battle her foes!
Here's where the strategy comes in. Each monster has unique abilities and powers that Kameo can use to defeat her enemies. She can start a battle as one monster, and switch to another to finish off her opponent, depending upon the situation she's in. Controlling the right monster at the right time is the key to success in this game.
It looks like Rare is going to come through with another solid title for the Xbox. Keeping checking back with us for a review as soon as we get our hands on a copy!
