With Eminem’s D12 lending voice-over work as gang members from a group called the Headhunters, rivals to the Outlawz gang, who is lead by the main character players’ will take control of in this gritty, comicless portrayal of urban city crime life. Tre is his name, and brutal gang violence is his game; pitting players against the mean streets rowdy antics, that make survival a key to building a strong gang reputation. Not to mention avoiding the incorruptible hammer of driven law enforcers.

Finally getting on the band-wagon

A host of publishers are seemingly trying to cash in on the craze gamers buy into with open-ended, free-roaming environments, featured in such titles as True Crime and Grand Theft Auto. Crime Life is hoping to utilize this feature in a way of honoring the classic Sega title, Streets of Rage. Car-jacking and vehicular manipulation is not in this bad-boy’s repertoire. Instead Konami and Hothouse Creation are giving gamers more beat-e’m-up leeway with gang members and freely-immersive city environments, which are not wholly limited to the gain of victory, with fists alone. Players will be given a host of various weapons to dish out pain and deal a serious amount of brutality unto foes and pedestrians alike. Like many other open-ended action adventures, Crime Life touts fists, bats, bottles, pipes, and the standard assortment of violent related objects when used to cause injury; but in addition to this, CL: Gang Wars is also keeping long range weapons on-hand as well. Guns are not off-limits in this beat-e’m-up title, the way they are in some other fighting adventure titles. Giving this game a bit more edge in the way the gang encounters will be dealt with in the beat-e’m-up style fashion.

The element of brawling

There have been a slew of brawlers hitting shelves recently and many gamers will be wondering what differences separate one from the other? Well, while Warriors gives players 80's style movie violence, Crime Life is all about brutal gang beat-downs and savage fisticuffs. Pummeling your opponent is done with two different buttons that alternate punches, in which combos can be created out of the alternating variants of the attack buttons. When a foe is worn-down enough, they are put into a state where a finishing strike or attack can be initiated, based on the position and move used on the foe. Hence, the finishers are less than spectacular, but realistically mortal; ranging from back-breakers to straight head-butts, which can crack the skull of your opponent. Things that would normally kill someone in real life, if done correctly (or incorrectly). Blocks, throws and grabs make up for the remaining plate of brawling tactics. A special meter called the Lifeblood meter, can be built up for Brutals, Fatals and other special rewards used to punish and inflict unforgivable amounts of damage to your foes.

Keeping it real

Coming off the thrills of GTA, Konami is hoping fans of the series will take a liking to a more serious-based mission orientation. Though driven through a linear foundation for telling the story in Crime Life, players will still be given freedoms to carry out missions in various ways. As players will take Tre into the likings of drug deals and other ratty transactions, or vandalizing buildings; heading into massive gang battles; double-crossing twists that lead to drive-by shootings; or robbing a store to whatever end the story deems it necessary. Making things more monumental in their results, Konami’s Hot House development team is ensuring a measure of uncertainty for gamers. As every action, moral, immoral, or amoral will have effective and substantial consequences that take place throughout the game.

Trash talk for the street-wise

There is a lot of crude dialogue, and where-is Warriors based the slang on 80's trend of trash-talking, Crime Life is basing it on something a little off the way-end. Regardless of it’s sincerity or (lack of) realism, the game’s style and focus will be rightly accompanied by 25 musical tracks from all over; some specifically written for the game by D12, which capture and illuminate the fictional, gritty urban jungle, Grand Central City, that Crime Life Gang Wars takes place in. Hence, brawling fans won't have to wait long as this relentless beat-e'm-upper will be hitting shelves on October 18, 2005.
