Call Of Duty is known as the franchise that dethroned Medal Of Honor. While Brothers In Arms currently holds the title as the most authentic World War II game; Call Of Duty is the reigning champ of in your face war action. Call Of Duty for the PC won numerous game of the year awards and it’s direct sequel Call Of Duty 2 due out for both the Xbox 360 and PC is shaping up to be quite a sequel.

There is though another Call Of Duty game emerging from the smoke of World War II that deserves just as much hype and anticipation: Call Of Duty 2: Big Red One. Odd name I know but if you know a little about World War II history you’d know the Big Red was the nickname for the US Army’s 1st Infantry Division. The 1st is one of the most (if not the most) decorated Division in the United States Army. They were part of every major operation of World War II (including Overlord), traveled to numerous battle locals, and secured quite a few Medals of Honor. Creating a game around these brave men makes perfect sense.

Call of Duty 2: Big Red One is the console sequel to Call of Duty: Finest hour. It’s a little confusing since there is the direct Call of Duty sequel coming out on Xbox 360 also titled Call of Duty 2. Same name different platforms and goals. Call of Duty 2: Big Red One will be a multi-console launch on the Xbox, PS2, and Nintendo Gamecube and it is bringing something new to the table; a story. For the first time in the franchise a Call of Duty game will have an integrated storyline that drives the game forward. There will be no more jumping from American, to British and Russian forces; gamers will follow the Big Red One for the entire game. Activision plans to make players attached to the men they fight with. Cut scenes will do this primarily. The result is a stab of regret when one of your fellow soldiers gets taken out. Brothers In Arms did this very well, and it’s probably a good move by Activision to try and bank on this new idea.

The core of the Call of Duty gameplay experience looks to be pretty much a polished version of what gamers have come to expect. The entire game is played in first person, pitting the player against waves after waves of intelligent German soldiers all the while experiencing amazing scripted events. In short it’s a rollercoaster ride no one wants to get off of. Trailers have also shown that the A.I. of your fellow soldiers will be much improved over previous examples. They will understand where enemies are and accordingly yell out what they see. The player will get a great advantage by actually listening to what he fellow soldiers say. It might just save his life.

Graphically the game is definitely an improvement over Finest Hour. Not only do the characters models look more complete; the environments and packed full of detail. The real beauty arises though when the bullets start to fly. Explosion rip up huge amounts of dirt into the air, bullets buzz through the air, men fall; it is a visual and audio masterpiece. If there is one place where the Call of Duty franchise trumps all of its competitors it is the sound. Anyone who played the original Call of Duty can attest to this. Call of Duty 2: Big Red One will not only support 480p HDTV clarity but also 5.1 surround sound.

Players will be traveling to a variety of locals this time including the deserts of Africa, the farm hills of Normandy, as well as tight cities and cold winter landscapes. There is something here for everyone. Multiplayer will be available to both the Xbox and PS2 owners. While no official gametypes have been announced it can be assumed that Deathmatch, and Team Deathmatch will be among the list.

Call of Duty 2: Big Red One is going to be a blast. It takes everything that is great about the Call of Duty franchise and seems to be fixing all the mistakes Finest Hour had. It’s loud, intense, and for the first time will have some heart to it. Look for it to be released November 11th, 2005.
