Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time was perhaps the best overlooked multi-platform game of 2003. Now, Ubi Soft has reworked the critically acclaimed masterpiece from last year to what looks to be forming into a rare instance of where the sequel is better than its predecessor. With an edgier look and improved combat system that’s featured in Prince of Persia 2: Warrior Within, its safe to say that its definitely heading in the right direction.
Prince of Persia 2 puts you in a dark underworld in which you play as, well, the Prince of Persia as you attempt to avoid the incarnation of Fate in the form of a large, beastly creature, known as the Dahaka from killing the Prince. The Prince in the previous installment of the series, POP: The Sands of Time, used the Dagger of Time excessively and now has to be punished for his acts. It’s the Prince’s prime objective in Warrior Within to find a way to erase the events that previously occurred in order to keep himself alive.
PoP: Warrior Within’s most notable difference from the Sands of Time is its darker tone. The Prince is more aggressive and sports a more bad ass look in comparison to the lighthearted feel of the original. The Prince can now perform stylistic moves to dish out death on enemies, and man do they look awesome. The Prince can use an enemy as a human shield (or whatever the hell the enemies are), he can use the game’s environments (such as swinging around a pole while cutting enemies into two), as well as a plethora of other ways to send an enemy packing. In addition to these moves there are also many different combos to discover. Rather than implementing a forced combo system, Ubi Soft has obviously thrown around the idea of having the player discover their own methods of killing opposing threats. There were many awesome moves that I performed playing through it that weren’t listed in the basic attack menu given in the game. The combat system so far is no longer straightforward as it was in the previous installment, and it works amazingly well.
Ubi Soft is obviously continuing its streak in innovation in the action/adventure genre as seen in this preview copy of Prince of Persia 2. Warrior Within is shaping up to be one of the most beautiful and extremely fun games of 2004. I can’t help but say that Prince of Persia 2 so far is appearing to be Game of the Year material, and that’s saying a lot.
