Wielding fist of fury, Capcom has enabled players to face off in a new action adventure fighting game in which vengeance is only the beginning of a quest for redemption. With five playable characters and unique endings suiting each of these personalities, players extend their welcome in the city of Las Sombras, to finish some very important business of handing out payback with fists of vengeance.

Fists, Lies and Secrets

The game's story goes down like this: A crime boss named Zanetti who owns a cartel that runs Las Sombras, one day finds out about a rival cartel’s drug deal, in which he plans to usurp the cartel of any proficient gains. Hence, this is carried out by his five top mercenaries that he sends to dispatch the rival cartel in the process of the deal. But as they arrive they find that their targets have already been dispatched and their own gang members executing an ambush on them, for what would appear to be a setup. Not only were they set-up, but they were framed by what would seem to be their own cartel. But why?

Players are thrust into the continuing mystery of the conspiracy involving your banishment from the cartel, a city full of angry gang members and not to mention the cops hot on your trail. But you’re not out there all on your own; you have the ability to pick up partners and teammates to help you reclaim your footing for exacting some much needed revenge.

Street Hazards

The game takes place with one of the characters you choose to play, walking around in an open-ended environment for which you can talk to or interact with street-goers, recruiting them on your team, or bribing them into giving you some important resources such as: Cars, weapons, money, etc. On the other hand, you can insult such individuals which might result in one heck of a beat-down.

A new feature to the fighting game genre has also been added, in which players can beat information out of other characters who refuse to talk on their own volition. If you need more money or need to gain some useful insight, you can bludgeon an opponent until they’re ready to talk. But too much of a beating might render the informant futile for any purpose other than being a human street design.

Speaking of street designs; the urban depth and building definitions were made to give the game a sense of immersion while the player traverses throughout the city. Which, features fully interactive objects for the player to utilize and/or wield at their own means: Pipes, bricks, bats, or even I-beams. You can smash your opponent into all sorts of environmental objects such as gas pumps, walls, fences or even let them get rolled over by speeding cars that pass by.

Nevertheless, with all the fighting the player will be dishing out to reform their own gang and take revenge against their betrayers, they are bound to attract a lot of attention: Rival gang members and law enforcement alike. Thus, the very convenient ability to buy clothes or alter the look of the character is available at the player’s disposal. New facial feature? No problem. How about a well tailored suit? Sure thing. T-shirt and jeans? All there, with the added ability to change the color of the clothes you buy. This way you can meld right into any urban environment without being painted quite so easily by the authorities or rival cartels, who no doubt are out to make you pay. But a new look costs money, and street fights are a quick way to earn cash; whether you’re dishing damage single-handedly or with your gang.

But even if you do happen to get caught by the authorities, the game doesn’t stop there. Players are allowed to fight their way out of prison and back out onto the mean streets of Las Sombras.

Fist-Load of Features

This game also features state-of-the-art graphics, fully animated characters and immersive environmental sound effects that help emulate a living city with AI characters. It even has bruise and blood effects on characters who take some nasty hits. Added to this, there is dynamic camera and lighting effects while you dish out the damage during battles.

The gameplay is also uniquely tuned to the classic one-on-one style fighting scheme. With grab maneuvers, counters, and combos. But what would a game about gangs be without gang fights? Even if you’re doing a simple one-on-one you can have your teammates execute certain moves from the sideline. Such as grabbing your opponent from behind so you can unleash a devastating combination attack on a haplessly immobile foe. Or, you can just hand out beat-downs in gang-vs-gang fighting that can either be done in single player or multiplayer modes.

Beatdown is sure to be a brawlers dream come true, or for those who have been waiting for an updated rendition of the River City Ransom series, this game looks to prove that if you want a real fight, you better be ready to do some serious beat downs. Look for it to hit shelves in mid-late August, 2005.
