Spider-Man is one of the most popular comic book characters. His empire spans comics, novels, cartoon series, CDs, movies and video games. The first Spider-Man game came out for the Playstation and to everyone’s surprise captured the look and feel of Spider-Man fairly well. Spider-Man than found himself on the Xbox with his two titles Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 both being released in conjunction with the widely successful movies.
This year a new Spider-Man game is to be released on the Xbox. Unlike the previous two; it will not coincide with a movie. Instead the game titled Ultimate Spider-Man will tie into the comic book universe of Ultimate Spider-Man. In 1999 Marvel launched the Ultimate line of comic books. Their purpose was to allow younger comic book fans to be able to jump in and enjoy stories about their favorite heroes without the extensive background. Of all the Ultimate titles Spider-Man is one of the most popular. It features a fifteen-year-old Peter Parker as he tries to juggle being Spider-Man, keeping up his grades, and staying in a relationship with Mary Jane Watson. This is the setting of Ultimate Spider-Man the videogame. The story of the game looks to take place sometime during the Venom story arch. Luckily, Ultimate Spider-Man scribe Brian Michael Bendis is writing the script and story, which for once might mean there is a really good narrative.
As for gameplay a few aspects are known for sure. The game is again set in a free-roaming recreation of New York City. This is a continuation of the popular design choice of Spider-Man 2. Fans can also look forward to the random crimes as they swing through the city, and it’s promised they won’t be as boring. Players will have the chance to play as Spider-Man (obviously) and trailers suggest Venom as well. It has yet to be determined whether there will be a big difference in gameplay since Spider-Man is fast and nimble while Venom is slow and strong. Hopefully, Ultimate Spider-Man doesn’t suffer from the “Arbiter Syndrome” of Halo 2 where not playing the main hero is actually a mark against the game.
A new design choice for the Spider-Man series is that the graphical look of the game will be entirely cel-shaded. Considering the fact that Ultimate Spider-Man is based off the comic book, this makes perfect sense. Spider-Man himself looks like he was literally drawn on the screen as is all the other main characters from the comic book. The city and other villains in the game also follow suit, making the entire comic book world seem more believable.
All in all Ultimate Spider-Man the video game looks to be a step in the right direction for the Spider-Man franchise. One wonders that after this game if the Spider-Man series will branch into two brands; the Ultimate and the ones based on the movies. Only time will tell.
